Six Sigma Ranch is welcoming 14 Friesian sheep who are making the Ranch their home. The group is under direction of our new Pyreneese sheep dog, Bianca.
As part of our sustainable farming practices, Six Sigma employs the sheep to remove the weeds in the vineyards prior to "bud-break", when the vines emerge from winter dormancy. (After a hectic spring season, the sheep retire to other parts of the ranch.)
The tall weeds, if not removed, can be a cold-trap, meaning more danger from spring frost to the vines. The sheep mow the weeds, and leave their fertilizer behind. No oil-burning engines are needed as is the case with tractors and propane torches. Sustainable farming at its best, and most picturesque.
